The Art of Hair Stenciling

Hair stencils are a great way to play around with your hairstyle without a long-term and irreversible change. It is an easy and very inexpensive way to experiment on your looks, particularly your hairstyles that will surely create a stir among your friends. Hair stenciling allows you to produce and apply non-permanent designs with the use of wash out colors, glitter and hair paints. You will appear hip, fashionable and modish when you attend a formal affair or a party or simply having fun with hair stencils.

Hair stencils work best for short hair but it can also be applied to just about any length of hair. The best way to do hair stencil is to do it yourself, not only can you express your individual style and creativity; it would also provide you fun and enjoyment. Doing it for the first time may not be that easy but as you experiment, in time you will become quite an expert and can be doing it in a breeze. Here are the steps on how to apply the art of hair stenciling:

• Before applying the design on your hair make several patterns from hard paper or cardboard. Let your imagination work as you design but if you are a tyro try to stick to simple designs such as hearts, flowers, stars and other designs that are easy to apply. As you become more proficient then you can try the more evolved or intricate design. You can draw the design on the cardboard and cut it out.

• Wash your hair with shampoo with your usual shampoo followed by a rinse out conditioner. Be sure to rinse both shampoo and rinse out conditioners completely out of your hair. To protect your hair from the hair paint, glitters and other substance needed to create your hair stencil design, apply a leave in conditioner

• Dry your hair with a hair dryer completely. Hair stencils or hair tattoos work best on straight hair.

• Ask a friend to help you plan out where you intend to put the stencil pattern, once you have decided as to the placement of the design, then apply the medium of your preference. Do it in a well ventilated room and keep your eyes closed and your face turned away from the spray.

• If you prefer to use color, apply color using a spray-on color. Keep the spray about 6 to 8 inches away from the hair and then spray over the entire stencil.
