What Should a Male Guest Wear to a Wedding
Choosing what to wear as a guest in a wedding is something that requires some deliberation for most guys. The season, the time of day and the type of wedding dictate the kind of attire that guests should wear in a wedding. The rule of thumb swings from a not too formal outfit where you might out-dress the groom and the male members of the wedding party or too casual that it may seem like you do not give much importance to the wedded couple. It should be something in between, depending on where, when and what type of wedding it is.
Here are some helpful tips to guide you:
Evening wedding
For a formal evening wedding, a black suit is de rigueur whether it is a summer or a winter wedding, and better yet a tuxedo, as long as it is held after 5:00 pm. In summer a black or dark colored suit in a lighter fabric is recommended. If it is says in the invitation “casual or semi-formal” a blazer, slacks and tie with a more stylish dress shirt than what you normally wear for the office is appropriate.
Morning weddings
A morning wedding is usually less formal than an evening wedding. If it is held in summer, black and other dark colors are out. So are wool and other thick and heavy fabrics normally worn in winter. Opt for a light colored suit in lighter materials such as cotton, seersucker or wrinkle –free linen. A sports coat or blazer worn with a nice dress shirt and dress pants are also suitable. For a winter morning wedding dark wool and other heavy materials for a suit is appropriate so is a cashmere v-neck sweater worn with dress pants and a shirt and tie underneath.
What to avoid:
• Cargo pants or jeans or any pants that are too casual
• Informal footwear such as sandals
• Wrinkled clothes and dirty shoes
• Bold prints and colors
